My name is gary van miert. I've been doing 100% raw food for a year now. Here's
the story of how I got there. I had been on the Standard American Diet (SAD)
all my life, until at the age of 25 I began getting sick all the time with chronic
colds and strep throat. After a quarter century of bad food and recreational
and perscription drugs, I was losing my health and looking for answers. A doctor
suggested I had bad tonsils and to have them removed, which I did, but I didn't
get any better. I gave up on MD's and started looking into nutrition. I stopped
eating red meat and soon became vegetarian, eventually moving to veganism a
couple of years later. My health improved greatly and I stayed vegan, not only
for my own well-being but for ethical and spiritual reasons. I also learned
something important. I learned that if you exercise dicipline in one area of
your life, you get rewarded, usually in another area you didn't expect! I used
to drink quite a bit, but when I became vegan and started cleaning my body out,
I lost my tolerance and taste for alcohol and gave up drinking. Another interesting
thing happened around this time. I started reconnecting with nature, going hiking,
to the beach, etc. This newfound kinship with nature grew even stronger on the
raw food diet. I started making the transition to the living food diet two years
ago, after a nasty bout with flu. I was eating very little fruit and had forgotten
what a salad was. When I got the flu, I lost my appetite for my cooked vegan
diet and ate fruit and salad exclusively. I noticed my skin clearing up and
felt much better, so I gradually started moving towards a raw food diet. It
took a year to make the transition to a100% uncooked food.
I'm 40 years young now and feel better than I felt when I was in my twenties!
Life is just beginning for me! I enjoy music - listening, playing guitar and
singing, songwritting. I also enjoy hiking, reading, film, and exploring New
York City. My goals are to continue to evolve spiritually, reconnect with nature,
and to grow healthier day by day through dicipline, will and sustained effort.
I'm also looking for companionship with a woman who shares my herbo-fruitarian
tendencies.
