> Madhu, the government of Afghanistan, is waging a
> war upon women. Since the Taliban took power in 1996,
> women have had to wear burqua and have been beaten
> and stoned in public for not having the proper attire,
> even if this means simply not having the mesh covering
> in front of their eyes. One woman was beaten to death
> by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally
> exposing her arm while she was driving. Another was
> stoned to death for trying to leave the country with
> a man that was not a relative.
>
> Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public
> without a male relative; professional women such as
> professors, translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and
> writers have been forced from their jobs and stuffed
> into their homes. Homes where a woman is present must
> have their windows painted so that she can never be
> seen by outsiders. They must wear silent shoes so
> that they are never heard. Women live in fear of
> their lives for the slightest misbehavior.
>
> Because they cannot work, those without male relatives
> or husbands are either starving to death or begging
> on the street, even if they hold Ph.D.s. Depression
> is becoming so widespread that it has reached emergency
> levels. There is no way in such an extreme Islamic
> society to know the suicide rate with certainty, but
> relief workers are estimating that the suicide rate
> among women, who cannot find proper medication and
> treatment for severe depression and would rather
> take their lives than live in such conditions, has
> increased significantly. There are almost no medical
> facilities available for women. At one of the rare
> hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly
> lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds,
> wrapped in their burqua, unwilling to speak, eat, or do
> anything, but slowly wasting away. Others have gone mad
> and were seen crouched in corners, perpetually rocking
> or crying, most of them in fear.
>
> One doctor is considering, when what little medication
> that is left finally runs out, leaving these women in
> front of the president's residence as a form of protest.
> It is at the point where the term "human rights violations"
> has become an understatement. Husbands have the power of
> life and death over their women relatives, especially
> their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right to
> stone or beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an
> inch of flesh or offending them in the slightest way.
>
> Women enjoyed relative freedom, to work, dress generally
> as they wanted, and drive and appear in public alone
> until only 1996. The rapidity of this transition is the
> main reason for the depression and suicide; women who
> were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic
> human freedoms are now severely restricted and treated
> as subhuman in the name of right-wing fundamentalist
> Islam. It is not their tradition or 'culture,' but it is
> alien to them, and it is extreme even for those cultures
> where fundamentalismis the rule. Everyone has a right to
> a tolerable human existence, even if they are women in a
> Muslim country.
>
> If we can threaten military force in Kosovo in the name
> of human rights for the sake of ethnic Albanians, citizens
> of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at the
> oppression, murder and injustice committed against women
> by the Taliban. STATEMENT: In signing this, we agree
> that the current treatment of women in Afghanistan is
> completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves action by the United
> Nations and that the current situation overseas will not
> be tolerated.
>
> Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere, and it is
> UNACCEPTABLE for women in 1999/2000 to be treated as
> subhuman and so much as property. Equality and human decency
> is a RIGHT not a freedom, whether one lives in Afghanistan
> or elsewhere.

Please excuse this interruption. I rarely pass on=20
"chain mail" because I believe most of it is just junk. =20
This, however, seems really important. Women are dying=20
in Afghanistan for no real crime other than being women. =20
This should not be allowed to continue. Remember, as=20
someone far smarter than me said "All that is necessary=20
for evil to triumph in the world is for people of good=20
will to do nothing." (Or words to that effect.)

Please take the time to read this. Or at the least,=20
please pass it along to someone else. Thank you.
This is something that we as human beings need to=20
support - I don't know if this is going to help but=20
take 3 minutes out of your life to do your part.=20
Madhu, the government of Afghanistan, is waging a=20
war upon women. Since the Taliban took power in 1996,=20
women have had to wear burqua and have been beaten=20
and stoned in public for not having the proper attire,=20
even if this means simply not having the mesh covering=20
in front of their eyes. One woman was beaten to death=20
by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally=20
exposing her arm while she was driving. Another was=20
stoned to death for trying to leave the country with=20
a man that was not a relative.=20

Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public=20
without a male relative; professional women such as=20
professors, translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and=20
writers have been forced from their jobs and stuffed=20
into their homes. Homes where a woman is present must=20
have their windows painted so that she can never be=20
seen by outsiders. They must wear silent shoes so=20
that they are never heard. Women live in fear of=20
their lives for the slightest misbehavior.

Because they cannot work, those without male relatives=20
or husbands are either starving to death or begging=20
on the street, even if they hold Ph.D.s. Depression=20
is becoming so widespread that it has reached emergency=20
levels. There is no way in such an extreme Islamic=20
society to know the suicide rate with certainty, but=20
relief workers are estimating that the suicide rate=20
among women, who cannot find proper medication and=20
treatment for severe depression and would rather=20
take their lives than live in such conditions, has=20
increased significantly. There are almost no medical=20
facilities available for women. At one of the rare=20
hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly=20
lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds,=20
wrapped in their burqua, unwilling to speak, eat, or do=20
anything, but slowly wasting away. Others have gone mad=20
and were seen crouched in corners, perpetually rocking=20
or crying, most of them in fear.

One doctor is considering, when what little medication=20
that is left finally runs out, leaving these women in=20
front of the president's residence as a form of protest.=20
It is at the point where the term "human rights violations"=20
has become an understatement. Husbands have the power of=20
life and death over their women relatives, especially=20
their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right to=20
stone or beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an=20
inch of flesh or offending them in the slightest way.=20

Women enjoyed relative freedom, to work, dress generally=20
as they wanted, and drive and appear in public alone=20
until only 1996. The rapidity of this transition is the=20
main reason for the depression and suicide; women who=20
were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic=20
human freedoms are now severely restricted and treated=20
as subhuman in the name of right-wing fundamentalist=20
Islam. It is not their tradition or 'culture,' but it is=20
alien to them, and it is extreme even for those cultures=20
where fundamentalismis the rule. Everyone has a right to=20
a tolerable human existence, even if they are women in a=20
Muslim country.=20

If we can threaten military force in Kosovo in the name=20
of human rights for the sake of ethnic Albanians, citizens=20
of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at the=20
oppression, murder and injustice committed against women=20
by the Taliban. STATEMENT: In signing this, we agree=20
that the current treatment of women in Afghanistan is=20
completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves action by the United=20
Nations and that the current situation overseas will not=20
be tolerated.=20

Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere, and it is=20
UNACCEPTABLE for women in 1999/2000 to be treated as=20
subhuman and so much as property. Equality and human decency=20
is a RIGHT not a freedom, whether one lives in Afghanistan=20
or elsewhere.=20

The 150,000,000 Year Old Diet
By Mike Benton

Man has been on this planet for about 150 million years. For
149 ½
million years (about 99.67% of his existence), he primarily
ate a raw,
vegetarian diet. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds - all
uncooked and
unprocessed - were the foods he lived on. Man gathered these
foods
in their seasons and consumed them in their whole,
untampered form.
He used neither fire nor tools to prepare this food.
Evidence from
fossilized tooth remains of primitive man reveals that
fruits were the
chief item of his diet for millions of years. Only in the
last five hundred
thousand years has man abandoned his original diet by eating
meat,
cooked foods and, later, processed foods.

How Long Is a Million Years? It's hard to imagine such a
time span
as 150 million years, so let's look at it this way: Imagine
the millions
of years man has been on this planet as being represented by
the life
span of a fifty-year-old man. For the first forty-nine years
and ten
months of his life, this man would have eaten the original
diet of fresh
fruits and vegetables. Only during the last two months of
his life would
he have started eating meat, cooked foods and artificial
foods. Two
months out of fifty years - that's the same relative length
of time that
the race of man has departed from its original diet!

No wonder man has degenerated so rapidly in the last few
thousand
years. Our bodies took 150 million years to evolve on a diet
of
uncooked plant foods. Everything in our physiology is based
on this
primarily fruitarian diet. You can't change the body
overnight - you
really can't alter it radically in even five hundred
thousand years.
When you re-adopt the original diet of raw fruits and
vegetables,
you're not taking any risks. It's not a "fad" diet, a
"crank" diet or a
"weird" diet. You're simply reclaiming and following the
biological
heritage of over 45,000 generations of your ancestors.

Time's on your side - it's our original diet.

(9) The Great American Cook-Out and Raw-In:

To be held on April 20, 2000

This is a day for raw fruit and vegetable dietary awareness
and
celebration of 100% raw food eating.

Raw food jamborees and potlucks will be held across America.

Raw and living foods are foods that grow in the garden,
orchard, in
nature or inside your kitchen, and are served and eaten as
Nature gives
them to us, without the degrading effects of cooking. Raw
and living
foods have their live enzymes intact, as well as all the
other vitamins
and nutrients that keep us alive. There is a growing
worldwide movement
of living and raw foodists who are enjoying the energizing
and
rejuvenating benefits of fresh enzyme-active fruit and plant
foods; our
unofficial motto is "live foods for live bodies."

(11) New Raw Food Forum & Chatroom!
I have created a new forum where people can view articles
about
raw food and natural health, upcoming events, and respond to
them.
You can post information, or start your own threads to begin
newsgroup
style discussions. The forum is moderated. That means that
all posts
must be okayed before they will actually show up on the
forum. This
protects those of us who want a newsgroup where we can
discuss
our common interest in raw food, without undue harrassment
by the
angry flesh eaters who usually attack vegans, vegetarians
and raw
foodists in unmoderated newsgroups. It also keeps people
from being
able to post profanity. I found out that it works! I
recently went there
to edit the forum, and found a person who had tried
(unsuccessfully!)
to post an insane rant against vegetarians, which was filled
with
profanity! It was very simple, I just deleted his entry
before it posted!

Do you have some great articles you would like to
disseminate? Do
you have questions pertaining to the raw food diet? Or are
you just
looking to connect with other raw foodists? Post them here!

Please come and check it out, and tell all your friends!

The url is: http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/57466

I have also created a chat room for raw foodists. Give your
raw food
friends the url, and tell them to meet you there!

raw foodists are the very best precyclers in the world? Raw

(17) Essay: Drug "side effects"..what doctors don't want you
to
realize about them! by Habib Bailey

How many have looked closely and seriously considered the
long list of unpleasant symptoms listed as side effects for
drug medicines? Often the list of unpleasant side effects is

so long that it should make any thinking person seriously
wonder what kind of dolt would consider taking the stuff.
If one considers the nature of the symptoms listed as "side
effects" for these drugs, it should become obvious that the
phrase "side effects" is merely a euphemism for "poisoning
effects." If one took a list of "side effects" and removed
the label that said "side effects", replacing it with a new
label that said "poisoning effects", without telling people
that it was a "medicine", people would not even question
calling that list "poisoning effects" upon reading it. They
would believe that it was a poison. But take those same
people and tell them that said chemical is a "medicine" and
they will say "oh, these are only "side effects"...
This shows the degree to which the field of drug medicine
inculcates magical, superstitious thinking in it's
adherents. It has never been valid science, even from the
very beginning. At least in the early days of drug medicine,

it's pioneers were more honest about the nature of their
"cures". It was even considered an undeniable truth by early

allopaths, that only a substance that was poisonous in
larger doses could possibly be considered as curative.
Looking at the early pharmacopeia will show that these early

allopaths believed in this principle, that was commonly
voiced by their own membership, and most definitely
practiced it. Modern practitioners today simply have more
technologically advanced poisons, therefore more
technologically advanced "cures."
All chemical drugs have their "side effects", which are
actually "poisoning effects". All chemical drugs, in a
sufficient dose, will KILL. All synthetic chemicals are
poisons, without exception, even those euphemistically
called "medicines" by the modern day witch doctors called
allopathic doctors. If you don't believe this, just let your

kid ingest anything in his/ her chemistry set. You'll get
the picture!

(18) The Basic Tenets of Natural Hygiene:

1 - Natural Hygiene holds that health is the normal state
for
all living organisms and that health is maintained through
natural, self-initiating, self-healing processes.
2 - Natural Hygiene holds that the one cause of all disease
is the toxic saturation at the cellular level of the bodily
tissues, bloodstream and fluids brought on by the depletion
of "nerve energy" (similar to ideas of "vital force")
reserves through wrong living habits. This state of
self-poisoning is alternately termed "auto-intoxication",
"toxicosis", and "toxemia".
3 - Natural Hygiene views disease as orderly retrograde
changes on the cellular level as a result of toxicosis. In
order to prevent these retrograde changes and to forestall
morphological changes and degenerations for as long as
possible, the body attempts to isolate and/or eliminate
abnormal accumulations of metabolic waste and ingested
poisons. Such bodily attempted actions of elimination may be

called "disease" (acute) and serve to prevent the
morphological, degenerative changes.
4 - Because toxicosis is "the one cause of all disease",
Natural Hygiene refutes the concept that microorganisms or
"germs" or "viruses" are the sole, causative factors of
disease.
5 - Because only the body is capable of instituting
cleansing and healing processes, Natural Hygiene rejects the

ingestion of any substances which the body cannot metabolize

and assimilate, and which cannot be used in the normal,
metabolic processes to thus be appropriated into bodily
tissue. Such unnatural substances can only further enervate
and poison the body and are not to be considered "food" or
"nutrition", in any way. Both medication and "quasi-food"
substances typical of of the chemicalized, processed food
supply are included in this enervating, poisoning category
and are, therefore, considered to be life-threatening.
6 - Natural Hygiene recommends the following as the Ideal
Diet and the only foods fit for the highest level of human
health and well-being: whole, raw fruits, vegetables, nuts
and seeds; prepared in proper combination and eaten in
moderation when in a state of emotional balance.
7 - Natural Hygiene employs fasting, which provides deep
physical, physiological, sensory, mental, and emotional
rest. This deep and almost total rest provides the body with

the ideal conditions necessary for the regeneration of
"nerve energy" necessary for the repair of damages and for
the elimination of toxins.
8 - Natural Hygiene maintains that health is the personal
responsibility of each individual and that vibrant health is

achieved only by the conscientious application of healthful
living practices in all areas of one's own life.

In short, health does not come in a pill, whether chemical
or herbal. Health comes only from healthful living
practices. The doctor cannot eat properly for you, obtain
adequate pure water, fresh air, sleep, exercise, sunshine,
etc for you. Only you can do these things, so only you are
capable of providing the requisites of life and health for
yourself. You are your own best doctor.

(20) Factors that Influence Metabolic Rate
by Dr John Checkal, DC

1- The time of day that you eat your initial & subsequent
meals
           a. if you skip breakfast you generally will run
the day with a 5-10%
              lower metabolic level
           b. if you eat only one meal per day or at least
60% of your
calories in the evening, you will generally
run the day with a
10-21% lower metabolic level and will be more
likely to
deposit added fat to the body.
           c. if you eat 3 regular meals with at least 25%
of the day's calorie
intake eaten at each meal taken at 3 equally
spaced times will
give you the most consistent regular metabolic
level
2- If you consistently overeat and consume too many
calories.
          a. you will generally run a 10% higher metabolic
rate attempting
to burn off the added calories.
          b. you will add fat to the body
3- If you consistently undereat and consume too few calories
not
equaling your resting metabolic rate, you will generally
run up to a
    30% lower metabolic level.
4- Women with each year in age they will burn approximately
5 calories
less. Men with each year in age will burn approximately
7 calories
     less.
5- Consistent exercise of at least 30 minutes duration with
an adequate
calorie intake will raise the metabolic level for 10-12
hours.
          a. exercise with a persistent low metabolic
resting level will
result in further depletion of energy stores
in the liver, tending
to further lower the metabolic rate.

score with
a pizza cutter to make squares so they will break more
easily into
pieces when dry. Dehydration time is about 15-24 hours,
depending on thickness.
