Hey everyone,
I'm katherine morrison.....I live in Atlanta, Ga with my DH Marc and my 18 mo old dd Alana.
Let's see...where to begin. I guess my interest in a different way began about 10 yrs ago. Though I'd been sick with various skin and GI issues...and chronic fatigue, I'd just plodded along. Then 10 yrs ago, I had an incredible flare of eczema. It was nearly incapacitating. My chiro suggested that I was allergic to diary. I'd always had a feeling that that was the case.
Off to the bookstore. I'd spend hours reading everything. Fit for Life seemed to make sense to me...at least the eating 'plan' did. I followed it meticulously. In two weeks I was a different person. My skin was perfect, my digestion nearly so. I only needed about 5 hours of sleep per night - compare to 10-12 hours of sleep per night plus *wanting* to sleep all day.
I stayed pretty true to that course, following Natural Hygiene food combining and doing about 70% raw over all with 100% live food days here and there, for about a year...eventually working my way back to SAD...with the accompanying ills.
Sparing you the details of the following 8 years - here's the general overveiw...I spent alot of time going back and forth between dairy free, not dairy free, wheat free, not wheat free, gluten free, not gluten free, FFL, not FFL, Body Ecology, not Body Ecology. Over time I realized a couple things - 1) at heart I'm a raw foodist 2) I have celiac and cannot do gluten at all, and don't generally do well with grains unless it's in very small quantities - ie a serving or so per day...and properly combined
In spending time learning about celiac issues, I've become very disturbed with the mindset in the celiac community that GF=healthy. It doesn't. for most of them, GF= SAD-gluten. No wonder there are still so many health (or lack thereof) issues. It's amazing, they're thinking that simply because they stop eating gluten that their health will be vibrant.
I got sick of listening to myself talk on the celiac boards....so I came here:) In my 'real' life, I'm definitely on the 'frindge' in my circle of friends and family. I have a couple of friends who eat 'healthfully', and a couple who are doing alot of raw/live foods. Everyone else eats anything that comes down the pike, especially from the direction of McDonalds...they have the health issues to match.
Every woman in my family has had breast cancer, except my 40 yo sister. My 39 yo sister had her first go around with it 4 years ago. She wasn't then and isn't now, interested in making any lifestyle changes.
Since my real life friends and family aren't interested in what I'm interested in - they're actually pretty vocal about how wierd they think it all is - I find internet communities where there are others doing what I'm doing. It's sometimes nice not to be the most radical one in the group:)
When you birth at home, nurse an 18 mo old, dont vaccinate, and are leaning toward a raw food diet, it's hard not to be the most 'out there' one on the block....and it gets old...at least for me. So, I'll be spending more time here than on the celiac lists;)
Or maybe not....perhaps I could sell them on the bennies of going raw...heck! you hardly have to worry about gluten contamination at all when doing this!!! - LOL
Anyway, today was my first raw day in a long long time and it feels great. I've ordered a bunch of books to help with interesting and fun recipies.
I was able to buy some Pizza Kinda/Kinder Pizza today at a local hfs (you know...the buckwheat crust, tomatos, pepper, spices, etc...) I ate half of the serving for dinner...my husband *stole* the other half from me and scarfed it down. he *loved* it. Wanted more. thought it was fantastic.
Cool! Might have a whole raw family pretty soon;)
